In August 2017, styrenics only saw minor price changes, even if the trends were deviating. Prices for PS and ABS were declining after the styrene monomer reference contract decreased by €30/t ($38), although suppliers could increase their margins slightly. EPS contract prices increased marginally because suppliers could take advantage of a tight supply situation.
However, processors had to prepare for a sharp price increase in September: suppliers will have transferred most of the latest styrene monomer cost increase of €190/t ($228) to their customers. In cases where bottlenecks were foreseeable – and EPS figures among them – premiums above the cost increase could not be ruled out.
