Klöckner Pentaplast’s Food and Consumer Products (kp FCP) division has launched a PP tray and film pack for fast-food retailers and the convenience market in northern Europe that is microwave compatible and freezable.
The packaging manufacturer has teamed up with Polish poultry processor Konspol Group to introduce the ready-meal idea for customers. Innovation manager at kp FCP, Paul Rawlings, said: “Whilst we manufacture millions of PP trays each year, prior to this project we didn’t have a microwaveable option.
“To meet the needs of the ready-meal market the tray had to be compatible with being deep frozen. To achieve this, we had to create a special additive blend that prevented the PP becoming brittle when exposed to extremely low temperatures.”
The tray underwent migration testing to ensure components did not leak into the food when heated. kp FCP also supplied Konspol with a complementary microwaveable lidding film, the LINtop PP, a lightweight and low-gauge film that is said to enhance shelf-life and prevent food from deteriorating in taste, smell and appearance.
Customers can choose from one-, two- or three-compartment trays and they are available in either black or white.
