A 3D varnish finish with haptic effects has been launched by Mondi that is designed to promote shelf appeal at point-of-sale.
Haptic impressions are said to stimulate human senses and create a ‘wow’ effect for the product, giving brand owners the opportunity to differentiate high-end products. By applying the coating reverse on the surface of a flexible material the effect resembles embossing, but with the advantage of an in-line process
The process of applying the finish can be integrated into existing production lines and the coating has a thickness of more than 50-micron, which provides benefits for brand managers without significant changes to the lamination process.
Oliver Sperber, chief innovation officer at Mondi in Vienna, Austria, commented: “Our application engineers were able to develop this innovative finish keeping in mind how important it is for brands to enhance their look and feel for consumers. The 3D varnish is an example of how customers benefit from Mondi’s synergised research and development strategies, having its core competencies in areas such as plastics films, packaging, paper and coatings.”
