The Bobst Hawkeye is a monitoring system that can detect pinhole defects during metallisation and accurately monitor the OD uniformity, which the company claims can have significant time and cost saving benefits for suppliers as well as protecting their quality and brand reputation.

The inline OD measuring system is based on the Bobst Registron module and eliminates the need for offline checking, which reduces the risk of customer rejects. Hawkeye checks defects throughout the full reel length and provides immediate live feedback alerts to the operator pinpointing the exact location of pinhole defects inside the vacuum chamber, so that corrective measures can be applied to eliminate them.

The optical density beam has a pitch of 25mm to meet AIMCAL specification requirements and detects, counts and categorises pinholes down to 0.1mm in size as well as scratches on the metallised surface of the film. It has a modular design and calibrates with a simple user interface that can generate a range of reports as PDF files, ensuring that full quality control and traceability are achieved.
