German chemicals producer BASF has completed the expansion of a Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) application centre for plastics additives at its existing production site in Kaisten, Switzerland.

The facility includes a compounding extruder, stretch film and tape lines and an injection moulding unit that the company says is capable of simulating the polymer production and processing technology, while also having a focus on automation.

The centre also serves as the regional technical support base for customers for applications such as polymer production, masterbatch and plastics converting. A test laboratory evaluates processing stabilisation, light stabilisation, long-term stabilisation or effect performance of additives.

Says Alberto Giovanzana, head of plastics additives EMEA: “The housing of existing innovation units and intelligent laboratories that are supported by the latest digital technologies on one dedicated site will lead to shorter development cycles and will enable us to meet customer requirements, while registering future market needs.”

The original site already has a development lab for the production of antioxidants that are added to plastics and lubricating oils to protect against ageing and the addition of the new site will make it the European competence centre. Italy and Germany are also home to some other regional technical centres.
